Its been hard to have the time and fast internet connection to be able to upload pictures the past couple weeks but here they are!
Day 9: After leaving Yellowstone we were only able to drive about 2 hours and then were forced to stay in Butte, MT due to slick mountain roads and heavy snow. When we woke up that day to head back out it had snowed around 6-8 inches through the night. Though the weather was still not the greatest we decided staying there wouldn’t help anything so we headed out toward Spokane, WA. We had spots of bad driving at first but quickly came into nice weather when we got into Northern Idaho and Washington.
Also, on our way through Idaho we found a beautiful lake. It was the perfect day to see it
Day 10 & 11: Our plans were to leave Spokane and drive 4 hours or so to Seattle. When I woke up however I found out that Jon Foreman was playing an acoustic set at a coffee shop 10 minutes from where we had stayed in Spokane. We ended up staying for the amazing concert (which was totally worth it) and driving to Seattle afterward at about midnight. We got to Seattle around 4am, slept for about 5 hours and then got up and went to the easter service at the downtown Seattle Mars Hill. We had some issues with finding out where the service was and ended up being 45 minutes late but it was still a cool service never the less. After that we hung out at the Park Place Market for a little while and adventured a bit in Seattle and then headed south for Cannon Beach, OR.
Day 12: Hung out in Cannon Beach for a while(which was one of my favorite places). It was a perfect day and made us forget all about the snow. We headed back east to Portland after that.
Day 13: Portland is a pretty nice city! I loved the whole atmosphere of it, and it was actually warm and sunny when we were there(which I hear is a rare thing). It was good to be able to spend an entire day somewhere and enjoy it without having to worry about driving so many hours after we left. In the evening we got to see the red carpet unfold for the ‘Blue Like Jazz’ movie premier. We weren’t cool enough to attend but we did watch as the events took place from inside a pizza parlor across the street from the Bagdad Theater where the premier was being held. It got us very excited to be able to see it in Nashville.
Day 14: Said our farewells to Portland and the only trees we had seen since home, and headed toward Utah. This day was an 8 hour long day of driving through all kinds of weather and all kinds of land and mountains. It was a pretty drive but also very tiring. We stayed in Idaho that night.
Day 15: Made it to Utah and the Bonneville Salt Flats which I had heard a lot about. It was probably the weirdest place I have ever seen only next to the Badlands. Though it was the complete other extreme. Instead of massive chuncks of the earth gone and carved into mountain like jagged rocks, it was the most flat land I have ever seen that went for hundreds of miles in the middle of mountains and red rock. Also the fact that it was completely white made it look fake.
Afterwards we made it to Salt Lake City, ate a couple tacos from a taco truck, and slept at another RYFO host home.
Day 16: Continued our way through Utah. Started to see a lot more red rock. Still not as much as I had imagined we would but I think most of it is on the eastern side of the state. We also started see snow again. There were tons of little indian shops and cheap motels(that were surprisingly very nice looking). We drove on I-89 the whole day(6 hours or so) and then wound up in Page, AZ for the night.
Day 17: We got well rested and headed out for a long day of driving. 2 hours to the Grand Canyon later we were met with some pretty heavy snow.(you just never think of it snowing at the grand canyon, or in arizona for that matter) We payed the first park fee we had had to pay on the trip due to the other parks booths being closed for the day by the time we got there. We stopped off at the first overlook. It was 30 degrees and pouring the snow at this point. We werent even sure if we would be able to see it. Sure enough though, the clouds opened to make way for the sun for just long enough for us to see the insane picture of the Grand Canyon. We stood in awe of it for as long as possible before having to leave due to the intense cold and wind. It was so big it looked fake. It looked like every picture i’ve ever seen of it and somehow we could actually see the Colorado River from the viewpoint we were at. We tried getting another view of it further up the canyon but with no success due to the snow being so intense it made an erie white fog so big the canyon was no longer visible. We would get out on the park platforms and look into complete white. No signs of anything. If we wouldn’t have known the Grand Canyon was actually there and had seen it earlier, we wouldn’t have believed anything significant was beyond the white.
We then headed to Albuquerque where we stayed with an amazing couple(again a RYFO host home) who made us a late dinner. We were definitely ready for sleep and did just that.
Day 18: We went to church with our new friends and then explored the area with them. They definitely made Albuquerque super cool and took us to an amazing mexican place!
Day 19-20: Stayed in Amarillo, TX the night before. We decided since we were in Texas we had to get some steak. The place we went was the most tourist-y spot we had encountered on our journey but was a fun place to visit.
We traveled to Oklahoma City after to meet up and stay with Laura’s family. They were amazing hosts and made us feel right at home. We even jammed a little with their sons band Kefalonia, who you should definitely check out! http://www.facebook.com/KefaloniaMusic?ref=ts
From there we went headed to Nashville where we are now!
Hawthorne district in Portland. Cool place (Taken with Instagram at Bagdad Theater & Pub)
Amazing day at Yellowstone. The pictures pretty much say all there is to say and even they don’t do it a bit of justice.
P.S.-the sky really is bigger out West. If you don’t believe me, take the trip and see for yourself, its incredible.
